About

Hey there,

My name is Lauren Reed Petri, welcome to my blog! My middle name is Reed because the doctors told my parents I was a boy, and no one really knows how it happened (maybe my leg looked a little weird…) and they had picked out the name Reed for their baby boy. When they found out I am decidedly a girl, they thought it was so funny that they made it my middle name. My first name is after my grandma Lorraine, but that isn’t as funny.

I was born and raised in Snohomish, Washington, even though I tell most people I’m from Seattle because it makes me feel cooler. I have one mom and one dad, as do most, but I also have a really rocking older brother, which most do not. We are complete opposites in every single way, from our looks to what we snack on, but I still think we have a twin telepathy. As for me, I really like to run, draw, and hangout with my friends! I am blessed to have the same friend group since middle school, and they are seriously the funniest and dopest girls that exist.

My biggest interest in my life is easily music, you can always find me with a headphone in, bobbing along to Frank Ocean. I have a really diverse taste in music, ranging from new age rap to oldies. Fleetwood Mac is by far my favorite band of all time, Dreams can literally have me dancing at a moments notice. My first love was Michael Jackson, and I went as him for Halloween for four straight years. I still feel bad for my parents about that phase.

As much as I would love to make this blog about music, I’m not smart or diligent enough to deal with the beast that is copyright, so I think I’m going to make it about murder. True crime and serial killers have also always been a major interest of mine, and I have watched enough documentaries for a lifetime. I like horror movies too, but my favorite ones are the ones that are kind of real. Like Silence of the Lambs is definitely a far out concept, but the fear and suspense feels so real throughout it. I’m also an avid Stephen King fan, and my biggest life goal is to read every single book that he’s ever written. The problem with that, though, is that he’s written a lot of books, so I just hope I don’t get hit by a bus any time soon.

As for my real and perhaps more important life goals, that part is a bit more of a mystery. I’m majoring in journalism, but I’m not really sure what I have to say yet. My ultimate dream job is to be Oprah, but I don’t think they’re really taking applications for that. I think it would be so fun to have my own talk show, like I really think I could keep a crowd going for a few seasons. I’m also very interested in law, so maybe law school or a CNN anchor is in the future, but I also cry really easily so I’m scared for that. Maybe I’ll go for a more John Oliver type of vibe, because who could make John Oliver cry?

I hope you enjoyed reading, stay tuned for more of my thoughts!

Blog reflection post

  1. My favorite project was definitely the logo project. I really like to draw, so I felt that this project utilized those skills the most. I literally stayed up until like 4am on a night it wasn’t even due because I wanted to make sure the apple looked just right before I went to bed. I definitely put way too much effort into it, but I was actually really proud of the product.
  2. I learned a TON from this course this semester. I actually think this was the most helpful class to my major that I’ve taken. I feel like our world is heading in a very digital direction, and I was super uncomfortable with the thought of computer programs like the ones we used in class. I learned that if you take enough time, you can get the hang of any program. I liked how the class included four very different programs so it pertained to a range of students’ interests.
  3. My major is journalism and minoring in political science. I’m not really sure what I want to be, but I know that I really like writing, reading, and speaking. I love public speaking or just talking to people in general, so being a talk show host would be nice. But more realistically, I’m also really interesting in politics so I would love to be a political writer of some sorts (or a cartoonist, maybe), or an anchor for CNN would be an absolute dream. I honestly am going into my future with an open mind, trying my best, and seeing where the wind blows me. This class was really helpful for my major because I will definitely be working with media of some sorts, and it will more than likely be digitally, so knowing even just an introductory level about these programs makes me feel a bit relieved and like I can definitely do it in the future if my job needs it.
  4. I honestly don’t think there’s anything that I wished I learned this semester, I mean obviously the programs have a lot of depth to learn about, but I felt like the work load was already a lot. I think if a student is interested in a program, they have every resource after this class to learn what they want to know.
  5. I use youtube a lot in addition to the tutorials, just if I needed more clarification on a function or my project needed something the tutorials didn’t cover. The tutorials were actually really helpful in learning the material, but especially the videos. The first tutorial I didn’t see the video so I just read the instructions and tried to follow along, but I was literally in tears of frustration because none of it made sense. Once I found the video and followed along that, my life improved exponentially.

Final video project

I pretty much completely changed my video from my draft, which I’m happy I did because I’m much happier with my final product! As for my design process, I kind of went with the flow and filmed when I was inspired to film. The beginning scene is really significant to me because I had just gotten done with an eight mile run, and just felt super accomplished. Sometimes, when I’m having body image issues, I like to remember all of the things my body is capable of; I can walk, run, skip, dance! How could you hate something that can do all that? That’s what I wanted my video to start as, so I filmed the treadmills after I was finished. I edited the beginning scene in Premiere, and added the text and sound through that. A lot of my critiques said to add music/make the intro better, so that’s what I tried to do!

For my first video draft, I talked more about fitness, running, and my routine. It was right after a run, so I was really sweaty, which I thought would add to the authenticity, but really it was just kinda gross. And I was a little bit flustered. So I thought, “what advice would I give myself if I was starting again?” And realized that my current habits have become so engrained because I made such small, easy changes over time that became really sustainable. So I made my video somewhat “youtubey” style and made my video about a few easy and quick tips, picking my personal most important ones to stay under the time limit. I like how the video turned out, I wish I put away my laundry first, but every time I refilmed it I didn’t like it as much, maybe because it wasn’t as natural.

I embedded audio through Premiere, and edited out some film and audio that was unnecessary. I added a bit of slow-mo effect at the beginning just for fun, and I’ve seen people do that before and always wanted to know how to do it (it actually took me a long time).I found Premiere to be the difficult at first but after the tutorials I knew the basic functions enough to complete the project. The only thing I don’t like is the filter I applied on the first scene, but that is really easy to fix, so I might do that because it really bothers me.

Final Audio Story

For my final audio story, I wanted to make a mock interview with someone who was really involved with fitness and health. I think there are a lot of bad stereotypes about people who enjoy fitness, and my audio story is kind of poking fun at those people. In my interview, “Kyler” was a health-nut who takes thirty minute showers. He goes on to talk about the insane practices he does in his day-to-day routine to “stay fit”, when really it all sounds excessive.

The idea behind this concept is to show that you don’t have to be insane about fitness to be fit. I think a lot of people get discouraged when it comes to living a healthier lifestyle because they feel that they need to do all or nothing, when really a little goes a long way.

For the design process, my friend Kyle and I started by looking at youtube videos of popular fitness gurus, and watched a lot of “morning routines” to get inspiration for the script. We wanted to make “Kyler” as cringey as possible, so we wrote down everything that made us cringe. Then, we practiced using improve methods to get the ball rolling, and then refined the script from there. I used the erase tool in Audition to cut the audio into more precise pieces, and edited out a lot of pauses and “um’s” to make it flow more. I recorded on my phone using the voice memo feature, and then recorded my introduction on Audition, where I used the scrubber tool to cut out pauses and help with the pacing.

I ran into most of my troubles when it came to adjusting the pacing and making it sound like one flowing piece, but rerecording some spots or redoing a section eventually made it come together better.

Final Design Project

Here is my final design for my logo project! For this project, I decided to make a logo for a fictional company that delivers fresh and healthy meals right to a customer’s door. I always think about this concept because I love ordering food, but the options available are usually less than nutritious. This connects to my topic because healthy eating can sometimes be inconvenient, so having more options would be really cool. It can also connect to mental health, because when I’m eating healthier, I feel better with my relationship with myself and others, and my study and school work improves because my brain is fueled by good food.

I looked at other food related logos for inspiration for this design, and looked at “cartoon (fruit)” for each fruit that I created. I referenced the readings for this unit when determining the colors of the design, and I spent a long time making sure the colors were complementary and worked well together. I wanted the colors to be bright and cheerful to illicit the same emotional response in the viewers. I wanted to include fruit in my final design because it’s the easiest recognized “healthy” food, and the process was pretty simple once I decided I wanted fruit to be the main element. I used the balancing techniques found in the reading to help compose them all together.

As for making the shapes, I revisited the tutorials for this unit and used the techniques that applied to my own logo. I also googled a lot and watched many youtube videos to gain more knowledge of the tools in illustrator. I used the rectangle and elliptical tool to start the shape, and then used tools such as the free transform tool to make it into the shape that I wanted. I used the grouping and layer techniques from last unit to help with moving the shapes around to how I want. I played around with the strokes and fills to get it to be the right colors and look.

I encountered a lot of problems using the software. I started my design pretty early which I was very thankful, because I got very frustrated at points. I also had to restart a good amount of times because of small problems (like not layering or grouping when I was supposed to. I used the pen tool a lot to help create the shapes, which caused a lot of frustrations. Or sometimes I would feel confident with a tool and not refer back to the tutorials, and skip vital steps that affected the overall product. My advice would be to take your time, and don’t get too cocky. I’m proud to say that these are all my own images, and I’m pretty happy with the result, so I’m happy that I took the time to make it right.

Logo Project Sketch

Here is my logo project sketch! The company that I imagined for this project is a company that delivers healthy food and meals right to a person’s door. In college, I find that I really struggle with getting readily available healthy options. A lot of people say that you can walk or take a bus to a grocery store to get healthy options, but sometimes when you’re cramming for a test at 10:00pm and need a meal for some brain power, a ready-made meal is a heaven sent. But usually the only options are places like Dominoes and Jimmy Johns, which leave me feeling like a garbage can after eating. I know that I would pay more for food that feels more like fuel than food that drags me down. I also feel that I’m not alone in this quest, so I thought of the name “Good Food Club”, for those who yearn for healthy options in their busy lives.

For the logo, obviously wanted to include healthy food so a person could take a cursory look at the logo and understand what it’s representing. I wanted to include a full meal or healthy snacks (my sketch was of a salsa spread), but I found that it was hard to include a meal in the logo that looked aesthetically pleasing. I do want it to include more diverse food, so I’m probably going to add some veggies (the most important food group, in my opinion) to make it seem more wholesomely healthy. I also like the font I chose, but I definitely want to play around with the colors of the logo to make it more cohesive.

For inspiration, I found a picture on flickr of the fruit cartoons and rearranged them into my own logo. For my final project, I am going to make my own shapes within illustrator (like make my own banana, for instance), and I need to improve on the lines surrounding them because I struggled on those a lot. Overall, I’m happy with how my draft turned out but I can see ample room for improvement.
